The birth of Million Solar Stars.

Inspiration from Dr. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Million Tree Project in Shanghai, China, transformed itself into the first glimmers of Million Solar Stars.  From 2012‐2014, students, faculty and community members of Shanghai American School (SAS) designed a program to develop clean energy and 21st Century lessons in schools with the ambitious goal of engaging 1,000,000 students globally through solar energy education.

Students designed and built solar model cars and solar windmills to test solar power technologies on a small scale.  After building working models, Million Solar Star students began dreaming big, planning big, and demonstrating big.  Through creative fundraising and a Guinness World Record Moonwalk attempt, students scaled up building solar models to installing a 4kW pilot system.  As of 2017, the solar array has produced over 5MWh of clean energy for the school.

Students are now analyzing educational, environmental, and economic benefits of scaling up to a larger solar array (~1 MW) at SAS.
